What is Auditing and Accountability and Why is it Important?

While access controls are critical in security frameworks for restricting the opportunities for abuse or unauthorized activity, they’re only part of the equations. In fact, frameworks such as NIST 800-53, Access Control Management is only one of twenty distinct families of controls.

Another notable one in the context of Rescue is Security Audits and Accountability.

Why are Auditing and Accountability Important?

These controls ensure that you are able to audit the events within an information system and link them to individual user. This helps you track accountability and ultimately tell the story of who is doing what within a system.

This is not only good to proactively monitor, it’s also good in the event of a breach to identify exactly who did what when.
